Costalegre, a long stretch of coastal zones, coconut plantations, sugar cane fields and fruit orchards, is an area that is rich in natural resources, making the local cuisine varied yet complete. Being close to the sea is a great advantage for seafood, prepared by experienced Mexican chefs (see restaurants in Costa Alegre).
 The diversity of natural resources inspires an exclusive cuisine that includes innumerable dishes from the sea, such as seafood a la diabla (prepared with a spicy sauce), shrimp cocktail, octopus, clams, and the traditional zarandeado grilled fish, as well as revitalizing soups.
The exotic fruit found in the area have been the source of inspiration and the material of choice for refreshing drinks and delicious sweets. The drinks include "pulque" (fermented maguey pulp), "tepache" (fermented pineapple or apple juice) and "ponche" (a steaming fruit infusion with different spices). For those with a sweet tooth, you can also find coconut candy and quince jellies.
Barra de Navidad is undoubtedly the best village in the region to find romantic and pleasant restaurants. The town of Melaque features few but nice, simple restaurants in palapa (thatched-roof) style to enjoy a delicious meal by the sea.
